This fine late 19th-century oil painting by French artist Jacques Edmond Leman (1829-1889) depicts a seated musketeer cleaning his sword beneath the shade of a tree. Leman exhibited at the Salon regularly and was well-known for paintings inspired by history.

Every element of the figure has been carefully observed, from the broad-brimmed hat with its dramatic plume to the richly coloured doublet, lace cuffs and polished rapier. Having studied under the academic painter François-Édouard Picot, Leman approached history with the eye of both an artist and a researcher, ensuring that his paintings felt convincing as well as beautiful.

He's also created a story here - the figure appears in a moment of contemplation, and we're invited to wonder what occupies his mind. Is he reflecting on a duel, a journey, or simply enjoying a rare moment of peace away from the demands of military life?

Such scenes were especially popular in 19th-century France. Readers had fallen in love with the adventurous world of Alexandre Dumas and the romantic image of the King's Musketeers, while artists increasingly sought to animate the past. Leman excelled at this. His paintings transform history into something relatable, allowing us to recognise familiar emotions in people separated from us by centuries.

Jacques Edmond Leman trained under François-Édouard Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and examples of his work are held in several French public collections. Prints after his compositions are preserved in the British Museum.
