Zacho, Christian (1843-1913)

Christian Zacho was an accomplished, medal-winning, Danish artist predominantly known for his idyllic landscapes depicting forest views in a naturalistic style.

He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later in Paris under Camille Bernier and Leon Bonnat. He’s represented at the Statens Museum for Kunst and Øregaard Museum.

Born in Grenå, Denmark to Rasmus Zacho, a farm owner, and Anne Marie Mørch Zacho (nee Mønsted). His mother became the great aunt of Peder Mørk Mønsted, one of Denmark’s most celebrated landscape painters.

Studied under the animal painter E.L. Høegh-Guldberg in Aarhus, Denmark.

1862

Enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
Studied under Janus la Cour, PC Skovgaard and Vilhelm Kyhn.

1865

Debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in Copenhagen. He continued to exhibit until 1891 aside from 1879 and 1880 when based in France.

1871

Awarded the Sødringske Prize.

1872

Travelled to Italy together with Anton Thiele, Otto Haslund and Christian Blache.

1873

Returned via the World Exhibition in Vienna.

1874

Travelled to Paris.

1874-1876

Trained under Camille Bernier and Leon Bonnat in Paris.

Travelled to Brittany with PS Kroyer.
