Troelstra, Jelle (1891-1979)

Dutch artist Jelle Troelstra (1891-1979) was primarily known for his progressive landscapes and portraits but he was also an accomplished musician. He trained under Willy van Schoonhoven van Beurden and Wim Schuhmacher. He’s represented in numerous public collections and his works were shown at the Rijksmuseum in 1939.

Timeline

1891

Born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. He was the son of Pieter Jelles Troelstra (1860-1930) who founded the Dutch socialist party, and Sjoukje Troelstra-Bokma de Boer, an author.

Moved to Geneva and studied music.

Trained under Willy van Schoonhoven van Beurden (1883-1963) and Wim Schuhmacher (1894-1986).

1921

Shown in Copenhagen.

1922

Travelled to France.

1923

Travelled to Corsica with Wim Schumacher.

1924

Moved to Bergen and associated with the painters of the ‘Bergen School’.

1925

Became a member of the Association of Visual Artists.

1927

Solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

1928

Shown at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam.

1932

Became a member of the Association of Visual Artists in Hilversum.

1934

Solo exhibition at the Art Hall of Lier, Amsterdam.

1935

Became a member of the Gooische Painters' Association.

1938

Became a member of the Rembrandt Society.

1939

Shown at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, as part of the ‘Onze Kunst van Heden’ exhibition (Our Art of Today).

1945

Elected as chairman of the Visual Artists Union.

1949

Became a member of the Dutch Circle of Graphic Artists and Illustrators.

1961

Honoured by the ICC.

1979

Died in Amersfoort, the Netherlands.
