Tägtström, David (1894-1981)

David Tägtström was a Swedish artist predominantly known as one of Sweden’s leading figures in drypoint engraving. He was also an accomplished portraitist, completing works for Queen Louise, Prince Eugen, and the Swedish Parliament.

His artistic education was diverse and thorough, training under Emerik Stenberg, Axel Tallberg and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts where was later elected a member. The National Museum holds examples of his work.

Born in Borlänge, Sweden to Olof Tägtström, a hairdresser, and Kristina Nordén.

Studied at Theodor Glasell's evening school.

1911-1912

Studied under Emerik Stenberg.

1913-1916

Studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.

1914

Awarded a travel scholarship and undertook study trips to France, Switzerland and Italy. Returned prematurely due to the outbreak of World War I.

Studied etching under Axel Tallberg.

1918

Married Märta Augusta Granlund.
Works shown in Stockholm.

C. 1920

Began to specialise in portrait painting.

1924

Awarded the Uno Troilis scholarship and travelled to the USA.

1925-1926

Lived in the USA.

1937

Elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.

1941

Works shown in Falun.

1944

Works shown at the Konstnärshuset in Stockholm.

1981

Died in Leksand, Sweden.
