German artist Friedrich August Herkendell produced vibrant landscapes, scenes and portraits with a broad brush and a strong sense of spirit. He was a masterful colourist - confident in his approach to colour harmony.
He only worked in France briefly but some of his early works are reminiscent of the French post-impressionists. They carry a sense of ‘joie de vivre’ and convey the electricity of early 20th-century Paris.
