Åslund, Elis (1872-1956)

Elis Åslund was an accomplished Swedish painter, sculptor and illustrator known predominantly for landscapes, portraits and figures. He trained in Stockholm and later at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.

He’s represented at the National Museum and had the honour of a Royal commission when he painted King Gustaf V. His brother, Helmer Osslund, and son, Carl Daniel Åslund, were also artists. His sister, Frida Åslund, was a writer.

Born in Tuna Medelpad, Sweden, to Daniel Aslund, a land surveyor, author and artist, and Catharina Elisabeth Åslund (nee Johansdotter Graan).

Studied at the Technical School in Stockholm as an ornament carver.

1892-1895

Studied at the Higher School of Art and Industry in Stockholm.

1898-1899

Undertook a study trip to Copenhagen and Munich.

1899-1901

Undertook a study trip to Rome.

1898-1916

Lived in Leksand, Dalarna.

1901-1907

Lived in London and undertook study trips to Paris where he trained at the Académie Colarossi as a sculptor.

1909

Married Signe Kristina Wetterhall. The pair would have at least five children.

1909-1925

Lived in Boo, Stockholm.

1928

Travelled to New York aboard the ‘Stockholm’.

1929-1946

Lived in Tor, Danderyd, Stockholm.

Moved to Djursholm.

1949

Mentioned in The American Swedish Monthly following an exhibition in Jamestown, USA.

“Elis Aslund, Swedish artist, well known for his portraits in oil of, among others, King Gustaf and the late Archbishop Nathan Söderblom, recently visited the United States to exhibit landscapes and portraits. Mr. Aslund, who is a younger brother of the famous painter Helmer Osslund, opened his exhibition in Jamestown.”

1956

Died in Djursholm.
