william-ayerst-ingram-evening-at-sea
William Ayerst Ingram, Evening At Sea

This radiant early 20th-century oil painting by British artist William Ayerst Ingram (1855-1913) depicts a solitary sailing vessel at sea, almost disappearing into a warm haze. Ingram was one of the leading British marine painters of his generation and became particularly admired for capturing the changing moods of the sea.

A small vessel sits towards the horizon, its dark sail little more than a handful of blurred marks. Around it, sea and sky appear to dissolve into one another beneath a veil of golden evening light. It feels akin to a recollected memory.

One can imagine standing on a beach during a warm evening, looking out towards the horizon as the sun sinks through the haze. The boat is sufficiently distant that its details have disappeared. What remains is simply the impression of having seen it: a sail, a hull, perhaps a flash of warmer colour beneath, surrounded by an enormous expanse of light.

Ingram has constructed the entire scene through subtle changes in value. Cream, pale gold, grey-green and muted blue drift almost imperceptibly into one another. Even the horizon has been allowed to disappear.

Across the water, loose strokes briefly catch the light before dissolving back into the surrounding surface. The sun itself is similarly understated, emerging through the haze on the left as a softly glowing disc.

It's among the more impressionistic works we've encountered by Ingram. By this stage of his career, he had moved considerably beyond the smoother marine painting of his earlier years, increasingly allowing atmosphere and sensation to replace details.

This development was recognised during his lifetime. Reviewing a memorial exhibition of his work in 1914, one critic praised Ingram's broad and straightforward handling and observed that some of his freer studies could “catch and record transient effects almost better than the more finished work could do.” That seems particularly apt here.

William Ayerst Ingram was a prominent marine painter who travelled extensively before settling in Falmouth, Cornwall. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He was also a founder and long-serving president of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists.

Held within a later ornate gilt frame.

Learn more about William Ayerst Ingram in our directory.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 29½” x 27½” / 75cm x 57cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Provenance: Private collection, UK.
Condition: Cleaned.
