Self-Portrait [After Anthony Van Dyck]
A large turn of the century oil on hessian after a self-portrait by Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641).
Van Dyck was unquestionably one of the greatest Flemish Baroque painters of the 17th century. By the age of 19, he’d already become a teacher in Antwerp and soon after began collaborating with Peter Paul Rubens. It was certainly a collaboration rather than a mentor-student relationship, as many would say that Van Dyck’s work could even outshine his older contemporary.
From here, he spent time in Italy and became highly regarded for his portraiture. Many wealthy Italian families sought after him for various commissions. Living in Italy also gave him access to study some of the Renaissance masters, such as Titian and Veronese.
Before too long, his virtuosity was noticed by King Charles I who brought him to England as his official court painter. It was during this final chapter of his life that he created some of his finest work, including several portraits of the King and his family.
This Victorian oil painting is after a self-portrait by Van Dyck, which he produced in 1621. It’s nicely done and the artist has captured the expression well. The art nouveau frame is likely to be the original and features an ornate assortment of carved flowers, berries and leaves.
