robert-gallon-killinghall-mill-yorkshire
Robert Gallon, Killinghall Mill, Yorkshire

This impressive late 19th-century oil painting by British landscape painter Robert Gallon (1845-1925) depicts the working watermill at Killinghall on the River Nidd in North Yorkshire. Signed and dated 1881, it's an unusually technical landscape by an artist better known for picturesque rural views.

Gallon had evidently become fascinated by the site. A smaller painting of Killinghall Mill dated 29 July 1880 survives, suggesting that he returned the following year to explore the subject on a considerably larger scale.

It's easy initially to see only the beauty of the scene: old stone buildings surrounded by trees, warm light falling across the mill and broad stretches of water reflecting the wooded bank. But the centre of the painting is a piece of engineering.

The River Nidd has been deliberately held back by the weir, creating the broad area of comparatively high, placid water visible across the foreground and towards the right. At the diagonal weir, that stored water suddenly changes character. It spills over the structure, accelerates downwards and breaks into a mass of white, aerated turbulence before entering the lower river.

Historic views of Killinghall Mill show that the arrangement was more complex than a simple barrier across the Nidd. Alongside the overflow at the weir, water also passed beneath an arch adjoining the mill buildings, where its energy could be harnessed for the machinery within. The water therefore performs several different roles within Gallon's picture. Above the weir it is stored energy: deep, relatively calm and reflective. At the crest it begins to accelerate. Below it, gravitational energy becomes motion, noise and turbulence.

Somewhere beside all of this, inside the mill, that movement was being converted into useful mechanical work. And the sound must have been extraordinary. From Gallon's viewpoint there would have been the continuous broad roar of the weir, punctuated by the heavier rush of water through the mill channel. Behind it came the lower mechanical rhythm of a working mill - shafts, gearing and machinery turning within the stone buildings - together with the ordinary activity of a rural workplace.

Yet Gallon has rendered the whole scene with remarkable tranquillity. The trees glow in the late light, the still upper water reflects their colours, and the mill itself seems almost absorbed into the surrounding landscape. Only the white torrent crossing the centre reminds us that this peaceful-looking place was powered by a considerable and continuous force.

That tension is perhaps what makes the painting so unusual within Gallon's oeuvre. The landscape is picturesque, certainly, but the mill has not been included merely because it is old or attractive. Everything in the composition leads back to the movement of the water.

Signed/dated in the lower right and held in an ornate gilt frame.

Learn more about Robert Gallon in our directory.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 46½” x 30½” / 118cm x 78cm
Year of creation: 1881
Labels & Inscriptions: Labelled on the reverse with artist and title.
Provenance: Private collection, UK.
Condition: Cleaned.
