Red Rose

DESCRIPTION

An evocative half-length continental portrait of a lady with a red rose in her hair. Her head is turned to the left as she glances back at us over her shoulder. She holds a rolled cigarette between the index and middle fingers of her right hand.

The unconventional stance of the subject is reminiscent of the works of the French impressionist painter, Edouard Manet (1832-1883). Manet often challenged conventions with his portraiture and chose to depict reality, in all its infinite weirdness, rather than the idealised notions of classically-minded painters. He once said “There's no symmetry in nature. One eye is never exactly the same as the other. There's always a difference. We all have a more or less crooked nose and an irregular mouth.”

The artist responsible for ‘Red Rose’ was probably active around the end of the 19th century so would’ve been well aware of Manet’s style and approach.
