Portrait Of A Lady With Puffed Sleeves

DESCRIPTION

A large primitive portrait of a lady wearing an elaborate dress with puffed sleeves and a decorative embroidered bonnet.

Her sleeves would’ve been shaped by an undergarment known as a ‘plumper’ or ’sleeve puff’. These were slipped over the arm and constructed of linen stuffed with feathers. The aim was to exaggerate a lady’s sloping shoulder line while also giving the impression of a slimmer waist.

The portrait is housed within a sturdy 19th-century wooden frame that’s likely to be the original. It's interesting to note the roughly sawn canvas wedges.
