DESCRIPTION

A large half-length portrait of a lady, believed to be a member of the Beit family, wearing a lace-trimmed lilac bonnet, scarf, and black dress. Held within a 19th-century gilt frame that’s decorated with floral motifs.

Carl Theodor Demiany (1801-1869), also known as Carl Theodor Demiani, was an accomplished German portrait painter that studied at the Dresden Academy and worked first in Leipzig then Hamburg, Berlin, and Potsdam. He was the son of Carl Friedrich Demiani (1768-1823) who was also an artist.

Signed and dated 1849.

Condition Two small repairs to the canvas and the frame has several losses.
Artist’s auction highlight £1,357 achieved at Bruun Rasmussen, Denmark in 1995 for ‘Portrait of a young Lady’. ‘Portrait of an elegant girl’ reached 2,151 € (including fees) at Christie’s in 2002.

We always try to source frames that are appropriate for the age of the painting but can also provide contemporary alternatives if you prefer. You only pay for the cost of the actual frame (usually £30 - £50) as we include the labour for free.
