Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Signet Ring

DESCRIPTION

A characterful half-length portrait of a seated gentleman wearing a black jacket, white shirt, black cravat, and a gold signet ring on his right hand.

In the 1840s, fashionable men were inspired by the style of Prince Albert and sported tightly drawn waists and barrel chests, giving them an almost hourglass figure. Collars were worn up and were usually accompanied by a cravat or necktie.

This gentleman is also wearing a signet ring on his right hand, which was common among members of the rising classes. Over the years, signet rings have played an important role in commerce as they were often used to sign legal documents. Signets could feature a unique family crest, emblem or monogram, which would be dipped into wax or clay before making an impression.

Interestingly, many of the Royals have worn signets over the years, including Prince Charles who wears one on the little finger of his left hand. He tends to stack his with his wedding band.

Given the fine selection of wares laid out on the table, perhaps this gentleman was an established importer of goods.
