Portrait Of A Gentleman [Att. Charles Allen Duval]
A Victorian oil on canvas depicting a characterful gentleman in a yellow waistcoat and black jacket. It’s attributed to the prolific Welsh artist, Charles Allen Duval (1808-1872), who painted numerous members of the landed gentry. He was well-known during his lifetime and heavily involved in Manchester’s growing art scene where he founded the Art Academy.
For 36 years, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and many of his works are held in high-profile collections throughout the UK. These include a portrait of the inventor Joseph Burch, which is now in the Science Museum.
