An original signed watercolour by Arthur Hacker RA ‘On the beach - Sandgate’ 1873. This beautiful rare early work depicting a beached sailing barge was painted by listed artist Arthur Hacker when he was only 14. He went on to produce outstanding works which hang in private collections and in famous galleries around the world such as The Tate.
Framed, mounted and glazed and in good condition for age. Note that there are one or two small foxing marks in the sky area commensurate of age. Old gallery label on back of frame (see images). Size 420mm x 340mm frame and 250mm x 175mm image area.
Arthur Hacker was born in London, the second son of the engraver Edward Hacker (1813-1905). He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and with Léon Bonnat in Paris before exhibiting his first picture at the Royal Academy at the age of twenty. Hacker’s career was long and varied, as is demonstrated by the broad range of his work now held at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool.
His early paintings often display something of the influence of the Newlyn School of painters in terms of their subject matter, but the handling of paint is generally much smoother and by 1887 Hacker was drawing his subjects from literature and mythology and was establishing himself as a serious painter in the French Academic manner. Throughout the 1890s Hacker taught at the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected an ARA in 1894 and A Wet Night at Piccadilly Circus was his RA diploma work in 1910.
Looking back over the artist’s career in 1912, A.L. Baldry characterised these changes in terms of “wholesome experiment” and “eminently memorable achievement”.
Paintings by Arthur Hacker are held in many public collections including the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, the Museum of London, the Royal Academy of Arts, Tate Britain and the Royal Shakespeare Company Collection.
