Maria Abbott

Regular price £295.00

A bust-length Victorian portrait depicting Maria Abbott (1835-1899). Maria was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Abbott (formerly Durdle), from East Coker in Somerset. Both were weavers by trade and were probably involved in creating ‘Coker Canvass’, which was regarded to be the finest sailcloth in England.

We know that Maria stayed with her parents and brother, Ralph, until at least the age of 16 before leaving home and working in domestic roles.

At 26, the 1871 census lists her as working alongside Mary Abbott, presumably an older relative, as a servant in Yeovil. While, at 36, we find her employed by the Newman family as a cook. Head of the house, Arthur Newman, was the Vicar of Wembdon, Somerset.

At 46, Maria had moved in with the Phillips family in Yeovil and continued working as a cook.

It seems that Maria remained unmarried, although we need to bear in mind that the census only gives us a snapshot of one particular day every ten years.
