A small oil on canvas depicting a monk staring curiously at a young couple as they stroll through a wooded area.

On the reverse, an inscription reads “Man is but mortal”, which is a quote from Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers (1837). “Man is but mortal; and there is a point beyond which human courage cannot extend.”

If the images display the artwork framed, then the frame is included in the price. For those that are unframed, we can handle the framing for you should you wish. We always try to source frames that are appropriate for the age of the painting but can also provide contemporary alternatives if you prefer. You only pay for the cost of the actual frame (usually £30 - £50) as we include the labour for free.
