RESERVED - Large Dark Barbizon School Landscape

DESCRIPTION

A large mid-19th-century Barbizon School oil on canvas depicting a small child among several haystacks before a far-reaching landscape.

The Barbizon School refers to a collection of artists that chose to work within the beautiful scenery around the village of Barbizon in France. At the time, landscape painting was often viewed as little more than a backdrop for classical scenes, but artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-François Millet, and Theodore Rousseau, sought to elevate its standing.

Often they opted to paint directly from nature, en plein air (outside), rather than work within the confines of a traditional studio environment. This passion for painting outdoors led to several artists developing a looser style of brushwork, which would’ve been quite controversial at the time. As a result, many cite the Barbizon School as laying the foundations for the impressionist movement, which began around 1860.

This particular work displays many of the characteristics of the Barbizon School and perhaps it was one of the many scenes created by artists working directly from nature. It's a very interesting piece and highly atmospheric.
