DESCRIPTION

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was one of the most influential artists of his generation and works such as ‘Bal du moulin de la Galette’, ‘La loge’ and ‘Le dejeuner des canotiers’, have become synonymous with the impressionist movement. His skilful variety of brushstrokes, combined with his masterful approach to colour, continue to captivate imaginations worldwide.

In 1862, Renoir had become close friends with Monet and both were struggling to make ends meet. To earn a living, he often undertook commercial work, such as porcelain painting and decorating window blinds. It’s easy to imagine both of them as the archetypical struggling artist.

During this early part of his career, he also briefly adopted a romantic style similar to Eugène Delacroix and this work, ’La Baigneuse Au Griffon’, belongs to that period.

The print was produced in Italy during the early part of the 20th century and, unlike some modern reproductions, it possesses a vibrancy and a richness of tone. Under magnification, it lacks the dot pattern often visible on modern prints, which gives it a finer quality.

It was created at Fratelli Alinari in Florence, the world’s oldest photographic firm, and a label on the reverse provides further information.
