After Archibald Thorburn, Hand-Coloured Photogravure 1
A hand-coloured photogravure after a work by the highly regarded Scottish artist Archibald Thorburn (1860 - 1935). Thorburn was considered to be the greatest bird illustrator of his generation.
This particular piece dates to around 1890 and has been framed by Hills and Saunders of Cambridge. We obtained this work along with another three prints after Thorburn, so it's plausible that this one was also purchased from the London Illustrated News before being taken to the framers. Back in 1890, the newspaper would produce prints using a single plate before colour was applied by hand.
Alternatively, it may've been purchased from Hills and Saunders directly.
