A peaceful 19th-century Swedish nocturne depicting a family fishing by twilight.

A young boy holds a fish in his left hand, presumably one he’s caught, while his mother leans in to talk to him. Perhaps she’s telling him to place his catch in the basket before it slips from his grasp.

While on the left of the image, a bearded fisherman, which is probably the boy’s father, is tending to the sail of a small boat.

The artist, Ehrnfried Wahlqvist, has masterfully rendered the moonlight as it gently illuminates a channel of water. A young boy’s back is slightly lit as he kneels by his brother.

Wahlqvist was the son of a glove maker and began painting from an early age. His studies took him to Copenhagen, where he worked alongside several experienced painters, and Düsseldorf where he studied under Carl Hilgers.

During his lifetime, his works were exhibited internationally including in Paris, Dublin and Philadelphia. Many are now held in museums throughout Sweden.
