Édouard John Mentha, Portrait Of A Young Man

DESCRIPTION

An impressionistic bust-length portrait of a young man in a dark green outfit by listed Swiss artist, Édouard John Mentha (1858-1915). For this fine little painting, Mentha appears to have worked quite quickly and used daubs of oils to create texture in places. The subject’s left eye is little more than a few rapid brush-marks.

Édouard John Mentha trained with the landscape painter, Barthélemy Menn, and he’s known to have worked in Nice, France. He’s primarily known for creating genre scenes involving regular people carrying out everyday activities, and several of his larger works have sold at Sotheby’s for in excess of £7’000.
