Eyvind Olesen, Bypass
A superb expressionistic scene entitled ‘Bypass’ by award-winning Danish artist, Eyvind Olesen (1907-1995).
A gentleman wearing a three-quarter length coat and a black hat approaches a bypass that winds its way between several brightly-coloured buildings. Dense swirls of colour and strong thick lines communicate with us at an emotional level, beyond the aesthetic alone.
Olesen’s style here is reminiscent of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch and also the great post-impressionist, Vincent Van Gogh. In 1941, Olesen was awarded the ‘Van Gogh legatet’ (Van Gogh legacy award), and it’s easy to see why.
During his lifetime, he exhibited widely with venues including The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He’s also represented at the Sorø Art Museum.
