A charming early 20th-century portrait depicting William and Constance Mair by Arthur Percy Dixon (act. 1884-1917). This fine example of Edwardian portraiture was almost certainly a commission and probably painted during Dixon’s time in Edinburgh. Here we see the young Constance sitting on a chair and holding open a book while her older brother looks over towards the coloured plates displayed within it.

Dixon was a well-regarded painter of portraits, scenes and landscapes who studied at The Royal Scottish Academy Life School. He began his studies in Hull before his family moved to Edinburgh where he spent much of his life. His studio was based at 47 York Place and he exhibited widely including in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.

An obituary in The Scotsman from 1917 refers to him as a popular character: “Noone could fail to admire his genial, kindly nature. He had gone in the full fruition of his art.”

The portrait is signed/dated and housed within a splendid foliate frame which is probably the original.
