Even the sky has been reduced to deep brown-green and charcoal tones. Yet gradually the picture begins to open.

A faint band of warm light rests across the horizon and catches the surface of the sea. Tiny points of illumination punctuate the distant shoreline, while the figures in the foreground are mere silhouettes. It's an interesting effect, as if Neumans is asking the eye to adjust to the darkness.

The great mass opposite is Tynemouth headland, one of the most historically charged stretches of coastline in the north-east of England. Tynemouth Priory and Castle had occupied the site for centuries, while its commanding position ensured continued military importance long after the monastery had fallen into ruin. During Neumans’s lifetime, the headland was still fortified, and the old Tynemouth lighthouse also remained there.

Neumans was intrigued by light effects. Although trained academically in Antwerp and capable of elaborate historical interiors, he repeatedly returned to views in which light emerges from darkness. In his interiors it enters through windows; while in his dramatic fire scenes it tears violently through the night; here it survives only as a narrow luminous edge across the sea.

The two foreground figures are particularly effective - an adult and child, standing together among the rocks and facing the water. Neumans gives us almost nothing with which to identify them, and somehow the anonymity makes them more evocative. One can easily imagine the experience: the faint movement of the water, rocks disappearing beneath the incoming tide, voices carrying strangely across the bay, and the enormous black headland opposite blotting out part of the sky.

After training in Antwerp, Neumans settled in Scarborough during the 1870s, where the sea became an important part of his world. His surviving works include moonlit harbours and coastal views in which vessels, cliffs and buildings are frequently subordinated to atmosphere.

Signed in the lower right and held in its original gilt frame.

Learn more about Alphonse Neumans in our directory.

Medium
Oil on canvas.

Overall size
19½” x 13½” / 50cm x 34cm

Year of creation
c. 1875

Labels & Inscriptions
Winsor & Newton canvas stamp on the reverse, which corresponds to the stamp used c. 1874-1882.

Provenance
Private collection, UK

Conservation
Professionally conserved, including careful cleaning to reveal the painting’s true colouring and remove accumulated surface grime that can be harmful over time.
