alphonse-neumans-a-view-of-antwerp
Alphonse Neumans, A View of Antwerp

This atmospheric little nocturne by Belgian-born painter Alphonse Neumans (1853-1893) depicts Antwerp beneath a darkening sky, its skyline reduced to a series of distant silhouettes beyond the river. Painted around 1875, it belongs to the period when Neumans was beginning to establish his life in Britain while remaining closely connected to the country of his birth.

It's an exceptionally dark painting. At first, the eye is drawn to very little beyond the low band of reflected light across the water. Gradually, however, the scene begins to emerge. Boats cluster along the river, figures gather in the foreground, masts cut sharply into the sky, and beyond them rises the dark profile of Antwerp itself.

The tall central spire is almost certainly intended to evoke the Cathedral of Our Lady, the great Gothic landmark which has dominated Antwerp’s skyline for centuries. Around it, lower towers, roofs and chimneys dissolve into the evening haze.

Neumans seems particularly interested in what happens when detail begins to disappear. The foreground is built from loose, almost abstract passages of dark paint. Mud, timber, boats, water and figures merge into one another, yet small highlights and broken edges are enough to suggest texture and movement. One senses the uneven riverbank underfoot, ropes and hulls lying close together, and people still working as the light fades.

It's tempting to imagine Neumans painting or at least sketching the scene directly before it. The handling is far less controlled than in his carefully constructed historical interiors, and the tonal compression feels like an attempt to capture a brief atmospheric effect before it vanished completely.

Neumans trained in Antwerp before settling in Scarborough during the 1870s, eventually marrying, raising a family and becoming a British citizen.

Signed in the lower left and held in its original gilt frame.

Learn more about Alphonse Neumans in our directory.

Medium
Oil on canvas.

Overall size
19½” x 13½” / 50cm x 34cm

Year of creation
c. 1875

Labels & Inscriptions
Winsor & Newton canvas stamp on the reverse, which corresponds to the stamp used c. 1874-1882.

Provenance
Private collection, UK

Conservation
Professionally conserved, including careful cleaning to reveal the painting’s true colouring and remove accumulated surface grime that can be harmful over time.
