adolf-johann-hoffler-italian-landscape-with-travellers-crossing-an-arched-bridge
Adolf Johann Höffler, Italian Landscape With Travellers Crossing An Arched Bridge

This mid-19th-century landscape by German artist Adolf Johann Höffler (1825-1898) depicts travellers crossing an old stone bridge within a rugged Italian valley. Höffler was a well-travelled painter whose search for subjects took him across Europe, North America and Cuba. Italy held a particular fascination.

Here, a mountain stream tumbles towards us through a rocky gorge, passing beneath a single-arched bridge before breaking around the boulders in the foreground. Beyond, weathered buildings cluster beside a small cascade, while high above them an isolated tower rises from a distant ridge.

The precise location is unknown, although the landscape is suggestive of the countryside around Tivoli. Höffler is known to have worked there, and a drawing inscribed 'Tivoli' survives at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

The rocky gorge, rushing water, cascade, old bridge and buildings gathered closely around the river are also characteristic of the Aniene landscape surrounding the town.

There's plenty of life here. Two donkeys cross the bridge, accompanied by a traveller, with one of the animals apparently carrying baggage. Chickens wander among the buildings on the opposite bank. And, tucked beneath a vine at an upper opening on the right, a woman appears to be holding a small child. It's barely more than a few touches of paint, yet the woman's blue clothing stands out against the warm masonry while the pale child stretches an arm outwards. There's something distinctly Madonna-like about their silhouette - perhaps a tiny echo of one of Italian art's most familiar images.

During conservation, the painting was cleaned to reveal the freshness of Höffler's colouring. Brilliant flashes of blue-white describe sunlight catching the moving water, while touches of emerald, yellow and russet enliven the vegetation growing between the rocks. The warm ochres and terracottas of the buildings contrast beautifully with the cooler, hazier tones of the distant valley.

Signed in the lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Learn more about Adolf Johann Höffler in our directory.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 32½” x 25½” / 83cm x 65cm
Year of creation: c. 1865
Provenance: Private collection, Germany.
Condition: Cleaned.
