A fine French portrait of a young Jean Royet (b.1830) wearing a black necktie, black jacket and white shirt. It’s interesting to note the black and white ribbon, which was probably added by the family to signify his death. It’s rare to find a portrait with this still in situ.

The canvas is housed within a beautiful 19th-century gilt frame with foliate decoration.

Craquelure throughout but the paint layer is stable under varnish. Canvas slightly undulant. One small area of possible paint loss in the upper left quadrant. Two canvases have been joined together and hence the line towards the bottom. A UV examination reveals areas of retouching including within the hair. Frame in very good condition.
