In the 1930s, when this charming little scene was painted, the Alps were a frequent destination for many of Europe’s most accomplished climbers. Over the course of that decade, the six ‘classic north faces’ (Grandes Jorasses, Eiger, Piz Badile, Petit Dru, Cima Grande di Lavaredo and Matterhorn) were scaled for the first time.

Perhaps the artist took part in one of these landmark expeditions and recorded his experience for posterity.
