This is another one of those scenarios whereby you know that a portrait has a rich story to tell but it’s sadly been lost over time.

It’s clear that this mysterious gentleman was once part of a larger work as the composition is unusual for a portrait. Perhaps he was originally stood alongside several others in a Flemish interior scene?

The portrait certainly carries a great deal of atmosphere and would make an interesting decorative addition to the right environment.

Craquelure in areas and the canvas has been relined. Scattered paint losses around the periphery, including a section in the upper left, and various abrasions.
