Fritz Syberg, Portrait Of The Artist’s Wife

Fritz Syberg, Portrait Of The Artist’s Wife

An enigmatic woodcut of the artist’s wife by Danish painter, Fritz Syberg (1862-1939). Syberg painted his wife, Anna, often and each work carries a sense of intrigue.

Anna was a notable influence on her husband’s career as after their marriage his work became brighter and generally more positive. He’s probably best known for 18 large drawings which he completed for Hans Christian Andersen's ‘The Story of a Mother’. These are considered some of the finest Danish drawings of all time.

The woodcut is signed/dated in pencil and housed within a good later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
