French School Frigate ‘Kate’ In Stormy Waters

French School Frigate ‘Kate’ In Stormy Waters

A 19th-century oil on board depicting a three-masted British frigate buffeted by stormy waters. Its red ensign is almost torn apart by the wind as it leans heavily towards its starboard side.

It bears the name ‘Kate’ and could perhaps be identified with further research.

The painting has accumulated a great deal of wear over the years which seems to amplify the drama of the scene within. It’s perfect for a gentleman’s study and particularly a dark wall.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
