Frederick Golden Short, Mr Lester’s Cottage Near The Church, Burley, New Forest

A charming late-19th-century depiction of a quaint cottage in the New Forest by English artist, Frederick Golden Short (1863-1936). As the title suggests, the cottage was owned by ‘Mr Lester’.

Short was born in Lyndhurst, which is also in the New Forest, so he knew this area well. The majority of his works tend to focus on the picturesque views around the area he spent most of his life. He exhibited widely during his life including at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

The painting is inscribed on the reverse.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
