Reserved - Abraham Hulk Junior, Autumnal Landscape With Distant Cottage

A charming Autumnal landscape depicting a picturesque view across a river towards distant hills by Anglo-Dutch artist, Abraham Hulk Junior (1851–1922).

In the foreground, a muddy track leads your eye diagonally across the composition towards a small cottage with a burning fire. And from here, our imagination wanders over the undulant landscape where sheep graze and birds appear against a cloudy British sky.

Abraham Hulk Junior (or Abraham Hulk the Younger) was known for his aptitude in capturing the subtleties of Autumn and he enjoyed the time he spent within the countryside. He was trained by his father, the notable maritime painter, Abraham Hulk the Elder (1813-1897) and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a gilded wooden frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
