Marine Scene With Warship

This worn 19th-century oil on panel depicts a lively marine scene from the 17th century with Dutch sailboats and a warship.

The artist has referenced a time when the Dutch navy was the envy of Europe for its scale and ferocity. Between 1652 and 1654 the Dutch fought the English in the violent Anglo-Dutch War and numerous artists drew upon this period for inspiration.

The painting exhibits various wear and abrasions, which add to its ‘lost in time’ appearance.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 18” x 14½” / 45cm x 37cm
Year of creation: c. 1850
Condition: Various abrasions. Varnish has yellowed. Craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
