Jean Micas, Manequin Mode

DESCRIPTION

A vibrant oil on canvas by listed French artist, Jean Micas (b. 1906), depicting a seated young lady with a large white cat on her lap.

Micas is known as a post-impressionist and was born at such an interesting time for French art. The post-impressionists, such as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat, sought to elicit an emotional response to their works by using form, composition and colour in a way that didn’t necessarily represent a subject accurately. For example, colour was often used to communicate a feeling rather than replicate exactly what the eye saw.

In this work by Micas, we see the influence of the post-impressionists, particularly in the form of the female figure and the swirls of saturated colour in the background. The cat’s fur seems to push forward unnaturally and towards an extended red rose bound to the lady’s waist.

The painting is entitled ‘Manequin Mode’ or ‘Fashion Model’, so its meaning is open to interpretation. But for us, it’s a beautiful representation of the love between a woman and her cat - and vice versa.

Micas was born in Garlin, a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, and studied under George Desvalieres and Dunoyer de Segonac. He exhibited regularly in France, Belgium, Germany and the United States and won a gold medal in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais.

The painting is housed within an ornate decorative frame and signed in the bottom right.
