In The Doghouse [P Roland]

Regular price £165.00

DESCRIPTION

A naive 19th-century folk art depiction of a scene outside of a coaching inn. Along with its stables, it seems that this particular hostelry has an area for dogs to rest a-while. But as you can see, the doghouse is currently occupied by two young gentlemen who seem to be sharing an ale.

Before the creation of the railway, coaching inns were vital for weary travellers when commuting between two towns. Inns tended to be around seven miles apart but this would depend on the region and terrain.

This particular establishment appears to be called ‘The Bell’, given the sign on the left-hand side and the gentleman on horseback certainly looks like he could do with a rest.

Inscribed ‘In the doghouse’ on the back and signed in the bottom right.

Please just ask if you would like this painting to be framed and we will try to source something appropriate for its age. We only charge for the cost of the actual frame (approximately £40) and include the framing process for free.
