The Road To Calvary

The Road To Calvary

A small early 19th-century oil on canvas depicting Christ carrying the cross as he trudges towards Calvary. He’s flanked by soldiers as two dogs bark fiercely at a bare-chested man holding the rope that binds him. This may be Simon of Cyrene who was recruited from the crowd.

The painting is signed illegibly in the lower right and dated 1833.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
