Swedish School, Interior of Gripsholm Castle

Swedish School, Interior of Gripsholm Castle

A fine 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a sumptuous interior at Gripsholm Castle in Sweden. This majestic building was constructed in 1537 and is owned by the Swedish Royal Family. It has a fascinating history and it’s full of beautiful artefacts that span the generations.

Since 1822, it’s also been home Sweden’s National Portrait Gallery, which is one of the oldest portrait collections in the world. If you peer through the door on the right-hand side, you can catch a glimpse of two of the pieces on display.

In this particular room, a huge 18th-century wall-hanging spans much of the view. Practically every surface is covered in ornate details and intricate craftsmanship.

The painting is housed within a handsome gilded frame with coved sides and foliate decoration.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
