Hugh Church, Shakespeare's Birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon

Hugh Church, Shakespeare's Birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon

An early 20th-century oil on board depicting Shakespeare's Birthplace by British artist Hugh Church (b.1865).

Two gentlemen on horseback look across towards a mother who is carrying a child and standing in a doorway. While a third gentleman holds a large piece of ironwork, which is perhaps a tether bar.

The Great Bard was born and raised in this charming timber-framed building and also spent five years here with Anne Hathaway. Perhaps Church enjoyed looking back into this period of British history and felt inclined to capture a scene from the days of yore.

The painting is signed in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
