Archangel Michael Vanquishing The Devil

This drama-filled early 18th-century Italian oil painting depicts the Archangel Michael defeating Satan. With flaming sword aloft, he sends the demon tumbling into the burning abyss, while raising an index finger to heaven, to which he will return.

Produced circa 1700, this skilful rendering captures a decisive moment as described in the Book of Revelation. “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. [Revelation 12:7-9]

Falling unceremoniously, the devil’s disfigured appearance is juxtaposed against the striking form of the victor. Michael’s crisp white wings blend into the heavens, as the demon’s hellish red skin vanishes into fire and ash.

Stylistically, the piece appears to draw upon Neapolitan influences, such as Luca Giordano’s (1634-1705) ‘The Fall of the Rebel Angels’ (1664) and his earlier work from 1663. Although the portrayal of the falling demon is unique, the similarities of the composition suggest a knowledge of Giordano’s interpretations.
