19th-Century Portrait Study Of An Older Bearded Gentleman

19th-Century Portrait Study Of An Older Bearded Gentleman

A fascinating portrait study of an older bearded gentleman looking downwards. It feels like a lost old master unearthed from a private collection or discovered in a dusty attic.

It’s almost certainly a study given its unfinished nature and perhaps it was created in advance of a larger piece. It's an unusual decorative item that captures the imagination.

The portrait is housed within an ornate 20th-century foliate frame with worn gilding.

Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board
Overall size: 22” x 24½” / 56cm x 62cm
Year of creation: c. 1850
Provenance: Germany
Condition: Marks, losses, scuffs and scratches. Frame with age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
