19th-Century French School Study Of A Dog

19th-Century French School Study Of A Dog

An enigmatic French school portrait study of a black and white dog looking upwards towards the yonder. We love the unfinished nature of this piece, which works well against the misty background of blue and green.

The painting is unsigned but it’s clearly been treasured over the years given its present restored condition.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 17” x 22” / 43cm x 56cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Provenance: France
Condition: Very presentable. Craquelure in areas but the paint layer is stable. Three tidy repairs with corresponding patches on the reverse.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
