Harry Percy Hain Friswell, Landscape With Wildflower Meadow

Harry Percy Hain Friswell, Landscape With Wildflower Meadow

This beautiful landscape painting by English artist Harry Percy Hain Friswell (1857-1941) depicts an undulant wildflower meadow before a copse and a wooded area. Radiant Summer light bathes the scenery - it’s warm, incandescent and still. A lone worker continues the harvest, a heavy scythe held aloft.

Friswell probably completed this during his time in Suffolk. He was a keen admirer of Constable and formerly lived at ‘Willy Lott’s cottage’. At times, we see similarities in his approach, particularly when compared to Constable’s oil sketches. It’s certainly true that both had a deep connection with the Suffolk countryside. Perhaps the artist discovered this quiet spot while walking near his home.

Signed in the lower left and housed within a substantial Rococo revival frame. Due to its size and weight, it’s only available for UK delivery.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
