A sublime oil on panel depicting several small vessels sailing on a calm sea. The sun appears to be setting behind a cloudy sky as its final rays illuminate the horizon.
The artist, Cornelis Jan van Rijsewijk (b. 1954), is primarily known as one of the leading Dutch etchers of his generation. Together with his partner, Anna Doedijns, he travels through the Netherlands to capture interesting views within historic cities.
His oils are often inspired by the Dutch old masters and in this piece we see the influence of Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) and Salomon van Ruysdael (1602-1670). Note the low horizon line and huge expansive sky that dominates the view. It’s a painting to breathe in as you enjoy a moment of complete calm.
