Margit Bereck Ballonyi Pal, Classical Still Life

DESCRIPTION

A beautiful mid-century still life depicting an arrangement of vivid flora in a style synonymous with 17th-century Dutch old masters.

During the early 1600s, a scientific interest in botany led to Netherlandish painters such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Ambrosius Bosschaert, and Roelandt Savery, creating some of the first paintings solely focused on flowers. Many of these works featured sumptuous colours, accurate details, broad compositions, and dark backgrounds.

This exquisite piece by Margit Bereck Ballonyi Pal (1939-) draws upon those historic references superbly and it's particularly interesting to note the inclusion of a tulip in the top right. A label on the reverse refers to her studying the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder.

Ballonyi Pal is an award-winning Hungarian painter and sculptor that studied at the Free School of Fine Arts in Vasuta. She possessed a prestigious talent early in life and, at the age of just 20, her works had already been exhibited at major Hungarian galleries and museums.

Following a 16-year break (to raise a family), she returned to her art and has since received further awards and accolades. Exhibition venues include the Clerkenwell Gallery London, Haas Gallery Vienna, Erdős Renée House Budapest, and the International Exhibition of Fine Arts Budapest. She’s also a member of the Association of Hungarian Artists, the Hungarian Painters Society, the Society of Hungarian Pastel Painters, and the Ferenc Vigyázó Society.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a gilded swept frame with decorative floral motifs.
