Landscape With Fjord

This early 19th-century Danish School oil painting depicts a picturesque view with woodland, figures and fjord. It’s beautifully rendered and reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch landscapes.

A bright woodland clearing draws the eye between contorted trees, while two fishermen drag heavy nets on umber soil. A third stands punctilious and watches a small vessel.

During the late 18th and early 19th-century, this style of landscape painting was particularly popular as it sought to elevate nature beyond topographical representation. Academy artists studied the 17th-century masters, particularly those of Italy, Flanders and the Netherlands, and adopted compositional techniques to achieve this.

The work is monogrammed SCM but we’ve been unable to trace the artist. However, it’s likely they attended the Academy in Copenhagen and studied alongside Jens Peter Moller (1783–1854).

Signed, dated and held in a 19th-century gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
