This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Peter Tom-Petersen (1861-1926) depicts a view on the Brahetrolleborg estate.

Beyond a fence with climbing rose bushes, three men tend to an ailing thatch. Their work almost complete under the glare of mid-Summer. Alongside, a canopy of foliage frames a ‘nut walk’ - a garden path flanked by various nut bushes. Tom-Petersen loved it here, returning often to the picturesque environs of Brahetrolleborg, a castle estate on the island of Fyn.

The roots of the impressive Brahetrolleborg Castle date back to the 12th century and it stands amid an estate with various buildings. Tom-Petersen was related to the estate manager’s wife, Maja Elisabeth Cramer, so was assured of a warm welcome. He married Marie Elisabeth Lorentzen, the estate manager’s daughter, at Brahetrolleborg in 1891 and it remained a place close to his heart.

Here, we see a view from around 1905, possibly depicting three friends working on a cottage he knew well.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
