Portrait Study Of A Man

It’s an enigmatic expression, his face in repose with eyes alive and focused. A bold outline describes a striking profile - a strong portrayal in red chalk.

This skilful portrait study by Swedish artist, Roland Svenssen (1910-2003) was created in 1930. It’s been suggested that it could be a self-portrait but we feel it’s probably more likely to be his friend, Emil Norrström. Norrström owned the portrait previously and he’s referred to in several letters.

Housed within a good contemporary frame and signed/dated.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
