English School Miniature Portrait Of A Lady

English School Miniature Portrait Of A Lady

A charming early 19th-century miniature portrait of a doe-eyed lady wearing a beautiful dress with short puffed sleeves and a necklace.

During the 1820s, it was common for women to wear their hair in curls which covered their temples. As the decade progressed, these curls became more elaborate with many choosing to decorate them with flowers and ribbons.

As you can see, this particular lady has decorated her hair with a rose to her left and ribbons at the back.

The portrait is housed within a period frame.

Condition
At some point in its life, the drawing has been cut down into an oval and attached to a piece of card. Its condition is fair with a little foxing. There are some marks on the glass which can be removed if you wish - just let us know if you would like us to clean it. The mark you can see in the lower right is on the glass rather than the drawing.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
